Regarding being remarkable, I would have no way of really knowing if you make some of the same mistakes I do; but I am going to have to go with the idea you might. You may already be remarkable. If you are more like me, however, you could discover you merely take it for granted that you must be.
My Purpose Here is to Have You Consider: Am I Remarkable?
It has taken a man with a penchant for purple cows to shake my world enough to get conscious about where I really stand in regards to being remarkable or boringly same as the most pedantic of humans.
- Like a pedant, overly concerned with formal rules and trivial points of learning.
- Being showy of one’s knowledge, often in a boring manner.
- Being finicky or fastidious, especially with language.
I realize you don’t know me, either, but definition — 2. being showy of one’s knowledge — refers to my attitude that I “know” things to be true about me that upon closer inspection are not really all that certain to be true.
This is a lesson I could have learned in grade school, had I been more attentive, observant and yes, you are right, humble.
The man I speak of is Seth Godin, whom I heard referred to as a genius by a British man, Ian Brodie, only yesterday. I was attending a webinar online, yes, on Thanksgiving.
It’s remarkable to me that I had written a post very recently on thoughts I’d been having about hearing Seth Godin speak on a Ted talk about purple cows (during which he obligingly performed slide magic by turning the same cow purple twice), because his remarks about the need to become remarkable had stuck in my head so and I really wanted to take some action; and then within days I’m hearing someone across the sea speak of him and call him “genius”.
He further pronounced him an “idea man” and I couldn’t help but reflect on that idea in two ways. His ideas had influenced a great number of people before me to change tactics and to take action. My direct experience was to want to change myself personally and answer the call to seek to be found remarkable in my own life, as well as to take his ideas and impact my business with them.
He spoke in his talk about what it means to be remarkable and gave instances of others and businesses and what was (at least after he pointed it out) remarkable about them.
You and I both have the same advantage of being able to find and listen to his talk on the TED channel and I don’t claim to recall the specifics, but feel extremely fortunate to have been motivated to continue to think about the point he put across.
Being remarkable, at least in some area of our lives, seems likely to me to be a worthy desire of all of us.
In my other post, which is the one most logically relating to business, I wrote about some personal yearnings that had become very poignant in the wait time between hearing the talk and writing the post.
I wrote another, this one, because yesterday in speaking very, very briefly with one of my brothers I realized the idea of applying being remarkable to his business and refashioning some marketing approaches around that idea seemed sensible to me and I wanted to talk further with him about it.
It has really struck me, with each of these experiences, how powerful one concept can be. I do acknowledge the need to frame and ask oneself the right questions about how being remarkable fits and can expand oneself and whatever objectives one is dealing with. It has been very exciting for me as well as illuminating. I hope the same for you.
